Seven days in Somaliland is enough to experience its greatest highlights without rushing. Here is a practical, well-paced itinerary that balances the capital, the coast, the highlands, and the remarkable archaeological sites.

Day 1: Arrive Hargeisa

Fly into Egal International Airport (most likely connecting through Addis Ababa or Dubai). Clear visa on arrival — straightforward, takes 20–40 minutes. Transfer to your hotel (Maansoor is recommended for first-timers). Spend the afternoon adjusting and walking the neighborhood around your hotel. Evening: dinner at the hotel restaurant or a nearby street grill. Early night — you have a full week ahead.

Day 2: Hargeisa City Day

Full day exploring the capital. Morning: the central market — give yourself at least 2–3 hours. Afternoon: the war memorial MiG aircraft monument, the Hargeisa Cultural Center, and the money changers district (exchanging some USD for Somaliland Shillings is an experience in itself — you’ll carry bags of cash). Evening: explore the lively food stalls along the main boulevards. Try camel milk from a roadside vendor.

Day 3: Laas Geel

Early start. Hire a 4WD with driver (arrange the night before through your hotel — $50–70 USD for the day). Drive northeast to Laas Geel (approximately 1 hour). Spend 2–3 hours at the cave paintings — take your time with each shelter. On the return, stop at a nomadic settlement for fresh camel milk. Afternoon back in Hargeisa. Evening: rest and pack for Berbera tomorrow.

Day 4: Hargeisa to Berbera

Morning departure for Berbera (2 hours). Check into a guesthouse near the beach. Afternoon: the old Ottoman quarter — wander the coral-stone lanes, photograph the carved doorways. Late afternoon: Berbera Beach — swim in the turquoise Gulf of Aden. Sunset from the waterfront watching the dhow boats. Stay overnight in Berbera.

Day 5: Berbera & Sheikh

Morning: explore more of Berbera, including the port area. Mid-morning departure for Sheikh (approximately 1.5 hours inland and uphill). Lunch in Sheikh, then explore the British colonial-era school buildings and the highland scenery. The air in Sheikh is cool and fresh — a complete contrast to coastal Berbera. Afternoon: return to Hargeisa (approximately 2.5 hours from Sheikh). Check back into your hotel.

Day 6: Naasa Hablood & Free Day

Morning at leisure — sleep in, revisit the market, buy gifts. Late morning: drive to the Naasa Hablood twin hills just outside Hargeisa. Walk to the viewpoint. Afternoon: visit any sites you missed earlier in the week. Consider the Hargeisa Cultural Center if you haven’t been. Evening: the best dinner of the trip — try a different restaurant tonight. Pack for departure tomorrow.

Day 7: Departure

Depending on your flight time, a final morning stroll or last cup of shaah at a local café. Transfer to Egal International Airport. Most flights depart mid-morning or early afternoon. Fly out via your connection hub, carrying more memories than you expected and a strong desire to return.

Practical Notes

  • Book hotels in advance, especially in peak season (November–February)
  • Hire 4WD vehicles through your hotel — they know reliable drivers
  • Carry USD cash throughout — credit cards are not widely accepted
  • Allow extra time at every airport — security and check-in can be unpredictable
  • This itinerary can be extended by adding Zeila (add 1–2 days) or Daallo Mountains (add 2–3 days with Erigavo base)
