From prehistoric cave art to pristine beaches — the very best of Somaliland
Laas Geel Cave Paintings
Arguably Africa's most extraordinary prehistoric site. Polychrome cave paintings dating back 7,000–11,000 years depicting cattle, humans, and dogs in vivid, perfectly preserved detail. Discovered by a French team in 2002. A UNESCO-quality wonder that very few international tourists have visited. 55 km northeast of Hargeisa. Do not miss this.
Berbera Beach
Over 200 km of pristine Gulf of Aden coastline with crystal-clear warm water, white sand, and virtually no tourism. Sea turtle nesting, snorkelling in coral formations, and a genuinely wild tropical paradise. The contrast with mass-tourism beach destinations makes Berbera extraordinary.
Hargeisa Central Market
One of the most fascinating markets in the Horn of Africa. Currency exchangers behind towering stacks of Somaliland Shilling banknotes, camel meat beside frankincense sellers, colourful textiles, and the organised chaos of genuine African commerce.
MiG Monument, Hargeisa
A genuine MiG jet fighter on a plinth — the same type used to bomb the city in 1988. Now covered in murals celebrating independence and resilience. One of the most emotionally powerful monuments in Africa and a defining symbol of Somaliland's identity.
Daallo Mountains & Forest
One of the last fragments of ancient Afromontane forest in the Horn of Africa. Dragon blood trees, ancient junipers, endemic wildlife, and breathtaking 2,400m+ escarpment views to the coast — a world-class eco-tourism destination that virtually no international visitors have seen.
Zeila — Ancient Islamic City
Crumbling Ottoman mosques and atmospheric ruins of a medieval Islamic port that was once one of the most important in the Indian Ocean world. Haunting, historically extraordinary, and requires a permit and local guide.
Sheikh Colonial Buildings
Best-preserved British colonial architecture in Somaliland, including an early 20th-century veterinary school set against dramatically beautiful highland scenery.
Berbera Old Town
Ottoman-era mosques, colonial warehouses, and traditional architecture reflecting centuries of Red Sea maritime trade — photogenic and genuinely atmospheric.
Nomadic Community Visits
Visiting nomadic families in their portable aqal homes to drink fresh camel milk, hear oral poetry, and experience legendary Somali hospitality — unchanged for millennia.
Hargeisa Wildlife Sanctuary
Rescued cheetahs, baboons, and antelope species in a sanctuary within easy reach of the capital. Close-up wildlife encounters with genuine conservation context.
