Destinations & Regions
From ancient coastal cities to dramatic mountain ranges — every corner of Somaliland tells a story
Hargeisa — The Capital
Somaliland's vibrant capital (1M+ pop) is the perfect starting point. Explore the MiG monument, the world's most visual open-air currency exchange, colourful livestock markets, craft souks, and excellent Somali restaurants. Hargeisa Egal International Airport (HGA) connects to Addis Ababa, Dubai, Djibouti, and regional cities.
Berbera — Red Sea Jewel
200+ km of pristine Gulf of Aden coastline makes Berbera one of Africa's finest undiscovered beach destinations. Crystal-clear warm water, white sand, and virtually no tourism infrastructure. The historic old town contains Ottoman and British colonial architecture. Sea turtles nest on Berbera's beaches seasonally.
Laas Geel — Ancient Cave Paintings
55 km northeast of Hargeisa, Laas Geel contains some of Africa's oldest and best-preserved prehistoric rock art — dating back 7,000–11,000 years. Vivid polychrome paintings of cattle, humans, and dogs discovered by French archaeologists in 2002. A genuine world-class wonder that very few tourists have visited.
Sheikh — Highland Retreat
Rising over 1,500 metres in the Sahil region, Sheikh was a British colonial hill station with preserved colonial buildings and botanical gardens. The surrounding highlands are cool, green, and dramatically beautiful — a welcome respite from coastal heat, with excellent day hikes.
Zeila — Ancient Islamic Port
One of the oldest cities in the Horn of Africa, mentioned by Arab geographers in the 9th century. Crumbling Ottoman mosques, atmospheric ruins, and a rich maritime heritage make this hauntingly beautiful. Requires a permit and local guide. Near the Djibouti border.
Daallo Mountains
Near Erigavo in the Sanaag region, the Daallo escarpment rises to over 2,400 metres. Dragon blood trees, ancient juniper forests, endemic wildlife, and breathtaking coastal panoramas make Daallo one of the most spectacular and least-visited natural environments in the Horn of Africa.
Burco — Livestock Capital
Somaliland's second-largest city and capital of the Togdheer region, famous for its enormous livestock markets — the largest in Somaliland. Burco offers authentic Somali urban life and excellent insight into the pastoral economy.
Borama — Cultural Gateway
Capital of the Awdal region in western Somaliland, home to the University of Amoud (founded 1998). Close to the Ethiopian border and a gateway to Awdal's landscapes and communities.
Erigavo — Highland Capital
Capital of the Sanaag region at around 1,800 metres elevation, with a pleasantly cool climate year-round. Base for exploring the Daallo Mountains and some of Somaliland's most remote highland environments.
Saadadin Islands
A small archipelago in the Gulf of Aden near Berbera offering snorkelling, marine birdwatching, and isolated beach experiences. Significant historical interest as the burial site of Sultan Sa'ad ad-Din II.
Nomadic Countryside
Some of Somaliland's most memorable experiences happen beyond cities — visiting nomadic families in portable aqal homes, drinking fresh camel milk, hearing oral poetry, and understanding a way of life unchanged for centuries.
