Transportation Guide
Getting to and around Somaliland — your complete transport reference
Hargeisa Airport Arrival
Hargeisa Egal International Airport (HGA) is 7 km from the city centre. Taxis are available outside the terminal — negotiate the fare before getting in (typically $5–10 USD to the city centre). There are no dedicated airport buses.
Private Vehicle Hire (Recommended)
The most practical and recommended way to travel in Somaliland — especially outside the capital. Hire a private 4WD vehicle with a driver through your hotel, a local tour operator, or contacts made in Hargeisa. A 4WD is essential for travel on unpaved roads. Daily rates: approximately $100–150 USD/day including the driver.
Inter-City Bush Taxis
Shared minivans operate between major cities. Cheap, slow, and crowded, but an authentic local experience. Main routes and approximate journey times:
Urban Transport in Hargeisa
Shared taxis (white minivans and small cars) ply fixed routes cheaply. Private taxis can be hired for the whole vehicle — most convenient for city exploration. Three-wheeled tuk-tuks are common for short hops in some towns; negotiate the price before boarding.
Road Conditions
The main Hargeisa–Berbera road is paved and in reasonable condition. Many other routes are unpaved and road quality deteriorates in remote areas. Seasonal rains (April–June and October–November) can make some tracks impassable. Always verify current road conditions with a local contact before travelling remotely.
Practical Notes
- Checkpoints are common on major roads — keep your passport accessible
- International driving licences are technically required
- Petrol (fuel) is available in all major towns
- Always carry extra water on any journey outside cities
- GPS mapping is limited — local knowledge and a local driver are invaluable
