Festivals & Events
Somaliland's cultural calendar — from Africa's greatest literary festival to independence celebrations and ancient traditions
Hargeisa International Book Fair
Somaliland's most celebrated cultural event and one of the most important literary festivals in all of Africa. Held annually at Hargeisa's Freedom Park, the fair brings together Somali writers, poets, academics, publishers, and artists from across the global diaspora and international literary world. Events include book launches, poetry readings, panel discussions, music performances, and cultural exhibitions. For visitors interested in Somali culture, literature, and politics, the HIBF offers unparalleled access to Somaliland's intellectual and artistic community. Book accommodation months in advance for August visits.
Somaliland Independence Day
May 18th marks the anniversary of Somaliland's declaration of independence in 1991 and is the country's most important national holiday. Celebrations in Hargeisa include military parades, cultural performances, poetry competitions, music events, and public gatherings. Flags are everywhere, the city is festive, and the sense of national pride is palpable and deeply moving. A fascinating time to be in Somaliland for those interested in the country's political identity and extraordinary resilience.
Eid al-Fitr & Eid al-Adha
Somaliland celebrates both major Islamic Eid festivals with great enthusiasm. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan; Eid al-Adha commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice. During Eid, families gather, special foods are prepared, new clothes are worn, and the atmosphere across Somaliland is one of joyful celebration. Travellers present during Eid may be invited to join family celebrations — an extraordinary cultural experience that offers genuine warmth and welcome.
Traditional Poetry Competitions
Poetry competitions — where classical Somali gabay, geeraar, and jiifto forms are recited competitively — are held throughout the year at the Hargeisa Cultural Center and various community events. These give travellers access to the living heart of Somali cultural expression. Ask your guide to find the next scheduled event.
Camel Racing Events
Traditional camel racing events are held periodically at various locations, particularly on public holidays. Camel races are highly social occasions that bring together nomadic communities and urban residents — excellent opportunities for photography and genuine cultural immersion.
