Visa & Entry Requirements
Somaliland has a straightforward and welcoming visa policy for international travellers
Visa on Arrival
Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Hargeisa Egal International Airport. The process is generally quick and straightforward. You will need:
- Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity
- Completed arrival form
- 2 passport-sized photographs
- USD $30–50 visa fee (cash only — verify current amount before travel)
- Proof of onward travel (return or connecting flight ticket)
- Accommodation details
Advance Visa Application
For travellers arriving by land or wanting to secure a visa in advance, applications can be made through the Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Contact the nearest Somaliland representative office in Djibouti, Addis Ababa, London, or Washington D.C.
Press, Research & Media Visas
Journalists, researchers, and film crews require a special media or research visa in addition to the standard tourist visa. These should be arranged in advance through the Ministry of Information, and may require letters of support from your organisation.
Important Notes
- Somaliland is NOT Somalia — you need a Somaliland visa, not a Somali visa
- Having a Somaliland stamp in your passport does NOT prevent you visiting other countries
- Some travellers prefer a second passport if concerned about stamps
- Always verify current requirements with the Somaliland Mission before travel, as policies can change
Permits for Specific Areas
- Zeila — Requires a permit from Hargeisa; a local guide is strongly recommended
- Sanaag region — Areas near the Puntland border require coordination with local authorities
- Military or border zones — Strictly off-limits without special authorisation
