Safety & Travel Tips

An honest, practical guide to staying safe and travelling wisely in Somaliland

The Safety Reality

Somaliland is categorically different from Somalia in terms of security. Since 1991, it has maintained remarkable domestic peace. Hargeisa has experienced very few significant security incidents. The country has held multiple peaceful democratic elections. Thousands of international travellers, aid workers, journalists, researchers, and business visitors travel throughout Somaliland each year without incident.

General Safety Tips

  • Travel with a local guide or fixer outside the capital — not always essential in Hargeisa, but strongly recommended elsewhere
  • Register with your embassy via the nearest country with a mission (Djibouti or Ethiopia)
  • Carry copies of all documents — keep originals secure at your accommodation
  • Don't travel at night outside major urban areas
  • Use established guesthouses recommended by trusted sources
  • Maintain a low profile — avoid flashy displays of electronics or wealth
  • Stay informed — monitor local news and travel forums for current conditions

Photography Rules

  • Always ask permission before photographing people
  • Never photograph military installations, checkpoints, police stations, or government buildings
  • Be respectful around sensitive sites
  • Photography at markets is generally fine with permission — and often warmly welcomed

Health Safety

  • Drink bottled water only
  • Take malaria prophylaxis for coastal areas
  • Ensure travel insurance includes emergency medical evacuation
  • Bring a comprehensive personal medical kit
  • The nearest quality medical facilities for serious cases are in Djibouti or Nairobi

Cultural Safety

  • Dress modestly and respectfully at all times
  • Alcohol is completely prohibited — do not bring or consume
  • Respect prayer times and mosque etiquette
  • During Ramadan, be extremely respectful of fasting customs in public

Government Travel Advisories

Most Western governments maintain Level 3 or 4 advisories for Somalia that technically include Somaliland. Experienced travellers and regional experts consistently argue this significantly overstates the risk in Somaliland proper. Read current advisories, research independently, and make an informed personal decision.
