Travel Information

Everything you need to plan a safe, enjoyable, and well-prepared visit to Somaliland

Getting to Somaliland

By Air

Hargeisa Egal International Airport (HGA) is the main gateway. Airlines currently serving Hargeisa:

  • Ethiopian Airlines — Connections via Addis Ababa
  • Flydubai — Direct flights from Dubai
  • Jubba Airways — Regional connections
  • African Express Airways — Regional routes
  • Daallo Airlines — Connections from Djibouti and regional cities

By Land

Main land crossings: Tog Wajaale (Ethiopian border) and Loyada (Djiboutian border). Land travel from Ethiopia via Jigjiga is possible for adventurous travellers, though road conditions vary.

Currency & Money

Somaliland uses the Somaliland Shilling (SLSH), though USD is widely accepted and often preferred. The informal currency exchange market in Hargeisa is one of the most visual money markets in the world — physical stacks of shillings traded openly in the street.

Important: ATMs are essentially non-existent throughout Somaliland. Bring sufficient USD cash for your entire trip before arrival.

Communications

Good mobile coverage in urban areas through local operators Telesom and Somtel. SIM cards are cheap and easily obtained with a passport. Good 3G/4G in Hargeisa and major towns. Coverage diminishes in remote areas. WhatsApp is the primary communication platform used by locals and is the fastest way to contact your guide or accommodation.

Health & Medical

Consult a travel health specialist before visiting. Standard precautions for the Horn of Africa apply:

  • Malaria prophylaxis is recommended, particularly in coastal areas
  • Typhoid and Hepatitis A/B vaccinations are strongly recommended
  • Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation is mandatory
  • Carry a complete medical kit including rehydration salts and antibiotics
  • Drink bottled water only — no tap water
  • Eat at busy, well-regarded restaurants; avoid raw foods

Local Etiquette

  • Greet people with “Salaam alaykum” — it will be warmly received
  • Remove shoes before entering homes and mosques
  • Dress modestly in public — especially women (covered shoulders and knees)
  • Ask permission before photographing individuals
  • Never photograph military installations, checkpoints, or government buildings
  • Alcohol is prohibited in Somaliland — do not bring or consume publicly
  • During Ramadan, avoid eating and drinking in public during daylight hours
