Photography Tips for Somaliland

  • Always ask permission before photographing individuals — a small payment or gift for portrait sessions is appreciated
  • Golden hour light on the desert landscape is spectacular — plan sunrise/sunset shoots in advance
  • Bring lens cleaning equipment — dust is pervasive, especially on roads
  • For Laas Geel cave art, bring a wide-angle lens and tripod; UV lighting equipment helps reveal details
  • Never photograph military, police, checkpoints, or government buildings — this rule is firm
